Melissa Kriegshauser

bio_kriegshauser.jpgHaving grown up with a large menagerie of animals including a monkey, a pig and a parrot, Melissa has a nearly endless supply of entertaining stories to share with her second grade students each year. She is fueled by the enthusiasm and wonder of these 7- and 8-year-olds, who absorb information like sponges.

A teacher for more than 20 years, Melissa loves being able to observe her students’ growth over the course of a school year. She believes in a “freedom with fences” approach to teaching — complimenting a gentle, loving manner with clear boundaries in order to promote independence, foster learning and guide respectful behavior. She aims to be attentive to the individual personalities and minds within each group of children and tweak the curriculum from year to year to keep students excited and engaged in the learning process.

Married for nearly 40 years, Melissa loves spending time with her husband, two children and three grandchildren. She is active with her church, the Chi Omega Alumni Association and various local charities. An alumna of Visitation Academy, she also enjoys monthly reunions with several Viz classmates.

Maggie Martin

bio_martin.jpgPlaying “school” as a child set Maggie on the path toward a career in education. In the basement of her childhood home, she assigned homework to her sister and neighbors. “I’ve known since then that teaching was going to be my passion in life,” says the energetic and nurturing educator.

Maggie came to Rossman from Chicago where she earned a Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning from DePaul University and taught third grade. Her extensive experience also includes positions teaching fifth grade in Boston and Pre Kindergarten in El Paso.

“I love teaching early elementary school because the children’s brains are sponges and they are so intrigued with all the knowledge they are gaining,” Maggie says. “I also love seeing the transformation kids make at this age, especially from learning to read to reading to learn.”

Maggie’s teaching philosophy balances best practices, high expectations and the integration of personal skills to help teach the whole child. She is dedicated to professional development that enhances her sense of the effective school dynamic.

Beyond the classroom, Maggie enjoys spending time with her husband, baby girl and dog. She loves travel, especially to her summer cottage in Michigan. Maggie is also an avid baker and even started a company with her sister in Chicago, sharing gooey butter cakes and cookies with the windy city.
