Katharine Durham
Director of Admission

COVID-19 has disrupted nearly every area of our lives, but it has also unlocked creativity, resourcefulness and versatility — all evidenced in the work of Rossman faculty, students and parents. Our admission process, too, has undergone a temporary transformation as our campus is closed to visitors this year. We understand that getting to know a school and navigating the application process can feel overwhelming under typical circumstances. Be assured that although our admission process is virtual at this time, it remains our utmost priority to develop a relationship with our prospective families.

The partnership between Rossman and its parents is critical to the realization of each child’s intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and creative potential. Our redesigned admission process is focused on building the foundation for this partnership.

We are here to support you through every step of your journey to find the best fit school for your child. I invite you to contact me at any time:

Qualifications

A goal of Rossman School is to prepare children academically, socially and emotionally to succeed in an independent secondary school. Rossman’s accelerated educational program makes it important to give consideration to each child’s capabilities and challenges. An applicant must have the aptitude to meet the requirements of Rossman’s academic program. Standards for each grade level must be met to ensure a child’s placement. If qualified, siblings and legacies are given preferential placement at the Junior Kindergarten level.

Admission FAQ

Children need to be four years old by August 1 of the enrolled school year for our Junior Kindergarten and five years old by August 1 of the enrolled school year for our Senior Kindergarten.

We’ve learned through years of experience that children need to be grouped according to all of the following maturities: cognitive, social, physical, and emotional. Our experience has shown us that young students placed ahead of their chronological peer group frequently find themselves at a disadvantage later in their development in one way or another.

Our academic program recognizes that students acquire academic skills at different rates and in different ways. We’re committed to challenging each child appropriately at all grade levels. We present children with activities and materials that allow a full range of challenges and experiences.

When making the important decision of when to enroll a child in Kindergarten, we ask parents to think beyond their daughter or son’s “readiness” for their earliest school years, and consider their child’s development at all ages, including early adolescence and the teen years leading into college, and the quality of the college experience itself.

Rossman School does not maintain a waiting list. We encourage you to inquire today to begin your journey and learn more about Rossman. You may begin the formal admission process in the fall of the year prior to the year when your child would be eligible to enroll.

Our Junior and Senior Kindergarten evaluations are a combination of an individual developmental assessment by teachers and observation of children in small playgroups at Rossman. Aside from the evaluation day, it is possible that a member of the Admission Committee will visit your preschool to observe your child in the familiar setting of his or her own classroom.

Rossman often has a few openings in the first through sixth grades. Children in these grades are evaluated through a series of grade appropriate tests. First through sixth grade applicants are invited to spend a school day at Rossman.

COVID-19 Update
We are continually monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and adjusting our evaluation and student visit procedures as the situation evolves. Director of Admission Katharine Durham will discuss evaluations and visit opportunities during your virtual visit or reach out following receipt of your application.

  • Online Application
  • Signed giving Rossman permission to obtain school records, health forms and a teacher recommendation from the applicant’s present school (page 2 of Online Application)
  • Photo of your child (optional)
  • Non-refundable $110 application and evaluation fee (waived for 2021-2022 applicants)

Decision letters, enrollment contracts and financial aid decisions will be mailed on March 12, 2021. Later applicants are evaluated, if space is available, with individually scheduled appointments.

When there are more qualified applicants than openings available, we establish an unranked waiting pool. When an opening occurs, the admission committee decides which student to offer a space based upon the overall profile of the class and the match between the strengths of the child and the needs of the school.

While Rossman is a family school, we are also committed to making sure Rossman is the right school for each child. If qualified, siblings and legacies are given preferential placement at the Junior Kindergarten level.
